Loving our neighbors
The Kingdom of God that Jesus proclaimed always prioritized compassion and healing for those society most often overlooks. St. John’s wants to join Jesus in such active compassion.
Harbor ELL (English Language Learners)
St. John’s hosts a weekly, free English language class for any who seek it. With trained leaders joining from the broader community, new learners are assessed for their language skill and provided customized, one-on-one coaching. Thursdays, 6:30
Local Mission Partners
We’ve found partnerships the most effective way to provide substantial, practical support for our neighbors and to strengthen a community spirit of caring in Gig Harbor. Parishioners volunteer and the parish raises well over $30,000 in support for these organizations each year
Food Backpacks 4 Kids mission is to meet the nutritional needs of hungry children and their families, working towards having a community where every child is well-fed, can achieve their full potential and no family is food insecure.
Harbor Hope serves individuals and families experiencing homelessness, poverty, hunger, broken homes, and drug and alcohol-related problems. They do so by offering transitional housing for high school and middle school students who are experiencing homelessness and by creating a safety network comprised of a host home program, a mentoring program, as well as food, clothing and transportation assistance. St. John’s supports this program financially and through the volunteer efforts of several of its members.
Cricket Meyer serves as a Bible teacher and whatever else comes her way to the mostly women staff and children at Uyesu Unathi school located in the township of Khayelitsha, near Capetown, South Africa, where approximately 1.5 million people live within 14 square miles where 75% are unemployed, illiterate and desperately poor.
St. John’s officially sponsors two different Alcoholic Anonymous groups that meet here throughout the week. Each group is self-run, but we regard this work of recovery as a pivotal expression of God’s redemption work in this community.
